Tips on Powering Your Course, Your Way

Valued Contributor

It’s August and time for a new roster. Whether you teach in person or online, connecting with students can be difficult.

We know that students are more likely to do their work when a course is customized by their instructor. So, here are some ideas from Professor Audrey Wick to power your course with a personal touch to your course to raise engagement.

  1. Tip 1: Customize your course your way with icebreakers and virtual outreach to set the stage for your course and engage students from the get-go.
  2. Tip 2: Keep your course content current. Don’t lose students when that old link turns out to be broken.
  3. Tip 3: Use pop culture to gain attention. Use it in your examples or build assignments that let students incorporate their favorite musicians, TV shows, and more.
  4. Tip 4: Be your quirky self and channel it into your course. Your students will appreciate it.
  5. Tip 5: Encourage student contributions to your class, either through assignment or feedback.
