Opening Questions

One of our favorite and simplest techniques from James Lang's Small Teaching book is called Opening Questions.

Many of us teachers begin a class by briefly reminding students what we covered in the last class.

You'll more strongly reinforce what students learned in previous classes if you let them remind each other of what happened in the those classes.

Here are a few sample opening questions that Lang's (2016) suggests:

  • "Before we start, can anyone remind me what we talked about in class on Monday?"
  • "Before I introduce the third major theory we will explore in the course, what have been the two main theories we have discussed so far?"
