Greetings from Traverse City, MI

Valued Contributor

Hello KHS! I was browsing through the community and noticed that you logged in. Thanks, and welcome! What content support products do you use; cognos, aplia, MindTap, etc? Also, what area or discipline do you teach? I happen to use MindTap, my institution uses Canvas LMS, and I teach Criminal Justice, Security, Homeland Security, and Research Methods.

Anyways, as I mentioned, I just happened to be online and noted that you posted, and thought I'd see if there was anything I might be able to do to get you connected to the community, and/or to others in your discipline, if you haven't already found them. If so, feel free to contac me or Michael Britt, the moderator for this site.

Be well!

Hi Eugene.  Thank you for the warm welcome.  I teach marine engineering at the institution where I learned the rudiments of that trade  a quarter of a century ago. I am still learning about modern methods of teaching, so at the moment, I am not familiar with any of the content support programs you mentioned.  Other than the systems used for gradebook (Moodle) and academic advising (Banner) I am using the electronic equivalent of the 16mm and overhead projectors, chalkboard, and cutaway models that I learned with.  I owe a huge debt of gratitude to the media specialist at the schools library for helping me find video material.  I didn't know what to expect from the "cengage community" but was hoping to garner tips and tricks to better engage with students, and reinforce class material.  The sheer number of things my students need to learn in the 3 years of classroom training, and 1 year aboard ship, makes it imperative that I find a way to anchor it in their memory.

Hello Karl,

"Marine Engineering" - wow, that sounds complex! What does that entail exactly?

As for your note about engaging students: well, we've got ideas and tips in a number of places throughout the community.  Here's a link to our Engage Your Students area where other profs are talking about what they do to engage students.

We don't have a specific displine area for you, but you might want to poke around the other disciplines to see what they're talking about.  Over in History, you'll see that there are a few neat posts about using tech in your class.  The ideas there can apply to just about any discipline.  Definitely worth checking out.

So take a look around, see what you can find and feel free to contact us if you have any questions!  Oh yes, and there's a Community Tips area as well where you'll find brief videos about how to get the most out of the community: Community Tips.
