How do you structure the course to ensure all students use the adopted digital product?

One of our schools here in Michigan is using MindTap for the first time this semester, for a large Intro Psych course. The lead instructor was curious to hear from experienced users as to how to ensure that all students in the course are actively engaging with the digital content/assignments in MindTap. Is there a threshold in the % of overall grade that is the tipping point for 100% participation? She needs to be able to show that the pass grades have improved with digital, and worries that assigning digital will be a problem if ALL students do not register. Thank you!

Re: How do you structure the course to ensure all student...

I usually allocate 8-10% of the total grades to CNOW-based assignments, and typically I have 100% participation (sometimes 1-2 don't bother, and I don't think that increasing the % a little more would help with those). It is important also to provide students with all detailed information about the HW Platform - how to set up and register, how to access the HWs, grading details, other tools that accompany the product (students typically like the e-book option that comes with it), how to get technical support help if needed, etc. From my experience, if students face difficulties with any of the above issues, they are more likely to not use the product or stop using it midway too. So, apart from grades, I feel that instructors need to provide adequate documentation to make the user experience smooth, either in the syllabus or on the course website or on both.

Re: How do you structure the course to ensure all student...

We have a lot of students who will transfer credit to another institution, and the letter grade doesn't matter much to them as long as they get a C or better.  The GPA doesn't matter because they're already a student at the other institution.  This means I need to have a higher percentage of the points being earned in the digital product to ensure that they won't just get a cheap used book and not purchase/use the digital product.  I generally make sure at least 20 percent of the total course points are earned within the digital product, and we now have 100% participation almost every semester.

Re: How do you structure the course to ensure all student...

There are a couple of things I do for different courses. In one course, I have the majority of the course in MindTap and use the analytics in the gradebook to show participation in the course. When a student drops below 20% participation, I begin a course of action that includes their advisor and requested meetings. In my analysis class (I teach technology), I use a pre-assessments quiz that is available in MindTap that all students must take to show what their level of expertise is in the subject matter at the beginning of the course. At the end of the course, there is a post-assessment exam that I use for their final exam. This shows the progression of knowledge in the course. In my LMS, I utilize the adaptive release feature that will not open the remaining assignments until the pre-assessment quiz has been completed. This forces the students to register in MindTap and access the quiz by a certain date. Hope this helps.

Re: How do you structure the course to ensure all student...

I have weekly assignments in Mindtap that are required and part of the grade. I use about 50% of Mindtap ancillaries in my classes and have had HUGE success!! I haven't had any issues with students not using Mindtap.

Re: How do you structure the course to ensure all student...

Hello,

We are using MindTap for our American History course and we have made it 20% of the final grade.  We have had great success and to ensure that everyone was using it across the board we created a LMS shell for our adjuncts with assignments embeded.  They must do the minimum and can require more.  We are off to a great start.  What we have learned is the percentage has to be more than a letter grade for our students to be vested.  The 20% mark gets their attention and we've seen grades and retention increase in our courses.

Hope this helps.

In my experience, if at least 10% of the course grade is related to MindTap, the students use the digital courseware. At 10% not completing assignments, will result in a decrease of a full letter grade in the class.
