President Obama met with Chinese President Hu Jintao today, and while they announced that their two nations are working together in some critical areas--namely in halting the spread of nuclear weapons-- LA Times reporter Peter Nicholas writes today that there is still a divide on trade issues and how best to respond to the global economic crisis. While President Obama is pushing for China to open the doors for more US exports, President Hu Jintao pushed for the US to cut out protectionist measures. But apart from these specific issues, Kenneth Lieberthal, the Brookings Institution's lead China scholar, says there is one big change in these talks from previous meetings between US and China's leaders: global issues are at the center of the discussion.
