Top 50 Careers for 2010

U.S News and World Report released their top 50 careers for 2010. To create the list the researchers examined the Labor Department's updated job growth projections for 2008 to 2018 to find jobs that will have an abov-average job creation rate and median income. Seems that the evaluation is based on percentage of increase vs. the net total jobs created in a given field. Regardless here are their top 10:

  1. X-Ray Technician
  2. Veterinarian
  3. Meteorologist
  4. Computer Software Engineer
  5. Firefighter
  6. Special Education Teacher
  7. Financial Adviser
  8. Meeting Planner
  9. Funeral Director
  10. Multimedia Artist

Online Learning Helps Students Manage Work, Family, and College

Great article in The Baltimore Sun  today exploring how online learning can help students balance work, family, and college pressures. the article makes the point that for millions of Americans they would not be able to squeeze even a reduced course load of on-campus but through online courses they are able to continue and complete their education. A compelling element to the story is how the student they profile emphasizes the importance of online community and personal motivation as success factors.

#1 Reason Students Leave College

An article in the New York Times today explores the reasons why students drop out of college with reference to the "With Their Whole Lives Ahead of Them"  report by the nonpartisan research group, Public Agenda. A few interesting points jumped out:

Balancing work , family, and school was reported as the #1 cause for students leaving a program 

Students who do not complete their program are more likely to be funding their own education

Recommendation for more awareness that today's students bearing less and less resemblance to the 'traditional college student' image
