Today when I stepped on the accelerator of my 2003 Tahoe, the vehicle stalled and then the engine died. I tried restarting it several times and the engine tried to kick over. I let the car sit for a while and then turned the engine back on and let it idle for a while. Then the Tahoe ran ok but then the engine light came on. I took it to a mechanic who did a diagnostic on it and said I needed the fuel pump replaced but not to drive it around.

However, it seems to be driving ok. I have driven the vehicle for several miles now today and there does not appear to be a problem, except that the engine light is on.

How long can I drive this vehicle without having to fork out the $500 the mechanic says it will cost to replace the fuel pump.

Thanks in advance for your help.
