1990 K1500 Dampener Bolt/Nut Problem

Looking for any advice that can be given.

I'm working on a 4.3L V6 engine in a 1990 K1500 SLE Standard Cab. I need to replace the harmonic balancer which is corroding. I have removed the pulley assembly in front of the dampener by removing the 3 perimeter bolts and removing the center nut. The problem is unlike what appears in the manuals I've found (Chiltons in paper and online, and Factory Repair Manual) the bolt that runs through the pulley and through the balancer is still firmly locked in place. I could only remove a nut on the "front" of the engine. Looking through the dampener towards the camshaft I see threads but no grip point or head that I can get at with a wrench or ratchet.

As such I cannot attach the balancer remover (duckfoot) because this bolt is in the way and prevents the center extractor bolt from going into the duckfoot.

  • My mistake, I said looking towards the camshaft, I mean towards the crankshaft.
