I have used the Discovering Computers series for our computer concepts course for a number of years. Last year, our department decided to change textbooks to provide some variety. The text chosen had a "help desk" format for students to answer questions based on the chapter material, and other instructors thought that would make it interesting to students. I had always liked the variety of games with Discovering Computers which I found made it fun for the students to learn while playing a game. Some students who had begun the course with the Discovering Computers text, dropped, then took the course again with the other textbook indicated they preferred having the games to play. They confessed to spending a lot of time playing the games simply because they were fun--and said how much they learned while doing so. This year our department switched back!
